* explanation: The Norway maple trees on Monument Lane (formerly Cemetery Street) were planted in the early 1900s and are historically significant.

“During the depression, there were a great many unemployed men in town seeking work and applying to the Mayor and Council for assistance. One of the jobs they were given was to clean up the cemetery by cutting the grass and removing brush and debris. The Norway maple trees, which still border the cemetery, were planted at that time as saplings.” Source: Northern Valley Historical Society Newsletter, Vol 1, No 2 - Spring 2010, Page 1.

“Much has been written about the mystery of a country graveyard. Upper Closter had its own mysterious little private cemetery, located appropriately enough on Cemetery Street. Twelve sturdy trees stand braced along the roadside at evenly spaced intervals, on silent guard.”
